A cost-effective superhydrophobic-oleophilic quartz sand filter was prepared with only about 0.4 wt% organic functional groups by a typical surface modification method. The obtained superhydrophobic quartz sand demonstrates oleophilicity, which can be used as a high performance filter to separate oil-water mixture with a good reusability. The results not only could provide important models and technical supports for preparing lipophilicity/hydrophobicity filter, but also be a promising route for practical application due to its high efficiency, cost-effective and environment-friendly.
